What I have Learned

I have learned a lot in doing this research paper. I did not know that there are different forms of FASD, from full FAS to having milder effects. Also that within the first 2-3 weeks when most women don’t know they are pregnant is when alcohol does the most damage to your baby; by time they find out sometimes the damage is already done. If more people knew how early on alcohol affects a developing embryo maybe fewer babies would be born with FASD. If a couple is planning a pregnancy they would know that she should not drink even while they are trying.

I believe a lot of children go misdiagnosed because mothers don’t want to tell the doctor they drank while they were pregnant, and they caused their child to have the problems that they have. Some mothers drink when they don’t know they are pregnant and stop as soon as they find out. Other mothers are alcoholic and have problems themselves and need help changing their ways. I have worked with children with FASD before and everyone is so different. I remember one time I told a little boy to stop tipping his chair because I didn’t want him to tip right over. He looked at me and started to cry, this child would normally never do that, and it was the first time I had ever seen him act like that. Later on I talked to his foster Mom and they kept on changing his medicine for ADHD because he was having a hard time in school. It broke my heart to see him go through that. Knowing the best way for a child with FASD to learn and communication with the child on their level is so important.
