Introduction
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: FASD is a permanent birth defect syndrome caused by maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy (J Popul, March 6, 2014). FASD is the only disability that is 100% preventable, yet it is estimated that 9 in 1,000 babies are born with FASD (Public Health Agency of Canada 2003). FASD is an umbrella term; there are four different types of FASD:
•Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) •Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (PFAS) •Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) •Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBD) (Healthy Child Manitoba 2009) |
